SGPC writes letter to Karnataka Chief Minister on this issue

Amritsar, February 24:

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly objected to a college in Bengaluru which asked an Amritdhari (initiated) Sikh girl to remove turban to attend the college.

The SGPC has written a letter in this regard to Karnataka Chief Minister (CM) Shri Basavaraj Bommai asking him to ensure preservation of religious freedom of Sikhs in the state and also reminded him of the contribution of Sikhs to India.

SGPC President Advocate Dhami said that it cannot be tolerated to force Sikhs to remove their turban in their own country.

“It is a Nadirshahi (unconstitutional) decision which will never be accepted. Turban is very important in Sikh faith and it is an integral part of Sikh dress. Forcing anybody to remove the dastar (turban) is in violation of Sikh traditions and principles”, said Advocate Dhami.

SGPC President said that the Sikh community has given more than 80 per cent sacrifices in the freedom struggle of the country and the country’s culture is today alive due to Sikhs.

“The questions are being raised on the turban of Sikhs in India, where turban wearing Sikhs have served as the President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice and Army Chief. Sikhs all over the world wear turban and are working on various top positions, whereas, in their own country India, turbans are being challenged”, said Advocate Dhami, adding that the suppression of religious freedom of Sikhs can never be in the interest of the country.

Meanwhile, the SGPC President has also demanded the intervention of the Prime Minister of India in this matter and issuance of instructions to every state to uphold the religious freedom of the people.

SGPC President strictly demanded from the Karnataka government to take strict action against the people who committed such an act to protect religious freedom of Sikhs and hold accountability of those people who are obstructing the same.

Advocate Dhami said that the Sikh community will never tolerate any act of suppression of their religious freedom and the same will be strongly opposed.
