Amritsar, June 30: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will organise Samagam (congregation) at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, to commemorate attack on Sri Darbar Sahib during Punjabi Suba Morcha on July 4, 1955 by the then government.

Notably, this attack was committed on the night between July 3 and 4, 1955, in which, under leadership of DIG Mahasha Ashwani Kumar heavy police force was sent inside Sri Darbar Sahib Complex by the government. At that time, the Prime Minister was Congress leader Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and the Punjab Chief Minister was Bhim Sen Sachar.

SGPC had commemorated this attack on Sri Darbar Sahib for the first time last year in 2021 and maintaining its continuity, it has been decided to organise the Samagam this year too.

SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that Sri Akhand Path Sahib will be started in this regard at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall on July 2, and its bhog (concluding ceremony) will be held on July 4.

He said Panthak personalities and raagis, dhadi groups will participate in this Samagam.

“The governments have always committed excesses against Sikhs and one of its examples is the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib on July 4, 1955. During this attack carried out by the government to crush the Punjabi Suba Morcha, the police force had entered the premises of parkarma (circumambulation) of Sri Darbar Sahib with boots. Attack was launched on Langar Sri Guru Ramdas Ji and firing was done from the top of verandahs of parkarma of Sri Darbar Sahib, which the Sikh Qaum (community) can never forget”, said SGPC President S. Harjinder Singh.
