The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has welcomed the announcement made by the newly elected Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab in Pakistan, Maryam Nawaz, regarding the teaching of Punjabi in schools of the state.

Harjinder Singh Dhami said that Punjabi is the mother tongue of the people of Punjab in India and Pakistan, which is very important to be taught to the new generation. He said that any community cannot succeed after being separated from its mother tongue and also misses the heritage of its ancestors.

The SGPC president said that he has received information through the media that the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced in Pakistan on the occasion of Punjab Culture Day on March 9 that Punjabi will be taught as a subject in the schools of the state. He said that in Punjab, Punjabi should be taught as a subject in schools from the primary classes and the state government there should immediately implement the announcement made.

Harjinder Singh Dhami said that the issue of teaching Punjabi has been going on for a long time in Punjab, Pakistan and now the announcement made by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is commendable and should be implemented seriously. He said that at present Punjabi is taught from the ninth and tenth classes in Punjab, due to which the children of Punjabi origin are kept away from the education of their mother tongue for a long time.
