Giani Jagtar Singh, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Giani Gurminder Singh, Bhai Inderjeet Singh and others remained present

The Sewa (voluntary service) of washing and cleaning gold at Sri Harmandar Sahib, Sri Darbar Sahib began after the ardas (prayer) today. This Sewa has been entrusted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to Bhai Mahinder Singh, head of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha, Birmingham.

Prominent personalities including head granthi of Sri Harmandar Sahib Giani Jagtar Singh, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Bhai Inderjeet Singh on behalf of Nishkam Sewak Jatha were present on the occasion of starting the Sewa of washing the gold on the domes on top of Sri Harmandar Sahib.

Speaking on this occasion, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said special attention is given to the maintenance and cleanliness of gold at Sri Harmandar Sahib, the holy shrine of Sri Guru Ramdas Ji and Bhai Mahinder Singh of Nishkam Sewak Jatha Birmingham does this Sewa from time to time with support of the Sangat.

“Due to rain and pollution, the shine of gold reduces with time and its cleaning is important. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this Sewa is being done after a gap of two years. Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha does this Sewa voluntarily”, said SGPC president Advocate Dhami.

SGPC President thanked the volunteers of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha and hoped that they will continue to do the Sewa in such a manner.

Meanwhile, Bhai Inderjeet Singh said, “Our jatha had done the Sewa of cleaning the gold for the first time from 1995 to 1999 and they have been continuing to do this Sewa of cleaning the gold since then. This Sewa will continue for 10 to 12 days, under which, the gold on the outer area of the holy shrine will be washed with the natural method. For washing the gold, the boiled rittha (soap nut) water and lemon juice is used, which is completely the natural method and any kind of chemicals are not used.”

It is notable that recently on March 15, this jatha has started the repairing of gold plates and Minakari (inset work in walls and metal) inside Sri Harmandar Sahib.

While starting the washing Sewa, those present included Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib Giani Gurminder Singh, SGPC secretary S. Mohinder Singh Ahli, additional secretary S. Partap Singh, former secretary S. Sukhdev Singh Bhurakohna, manager of Sri Darbar Sahib S. Sulakhan Singh Bhangali, additional manager S. Iqbal Singh and others.
