Amritsar, July 18: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has demanded cancellation of a case registered against noted Sikh preacher Giani Jaswant Singh, registered against him in the year 2020, by writing a letter to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Tarn Taran, S. Ranjit Singh Dhillon.
A case 08/2020 under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against former Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib Giani Jaswant Singh at Bhikhiwind police station in Tarn Taran district on January 15, 2022.
On behalf of SGPC, former SGPC President S. Alwinderpal Singh Pakhoke, executive committee member S. Balwinder Singh Wainpuin, secretary S. Pratap Singh, assistant secretary S. Nirvail Singh and manager of Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Tarn Taran S. Dharminder Singh, held a meeting with SSP, Tarn Taran and handed over a memorandum demanding cancellation of the case.
In its letter written to SSP, Tarn Taran, SGPC said that this case seems to have been registered due to misunderstanding of views expressed by Giani Jaswant Singh during the katha (narration) in place of understanding them in the right direction. It said the first information report (FIR) registered about two and a half years ago is going to bring down the respect of Giani Jaswant Singh, who holds great reverence in the Sikh community.
The letter further said for the last about 40 years, Giani Jaswant Singh has been preaching the principles of Sikh faith, who is respected by people of every faith and he himself respects every religion.
SGPC being the representative body of Sikh community appealed to SSP Tarn Taran that the FIR 08/2020 registered on January 15, 2020 at Bhikhiwind police station against Giani Jaswant Singh should be cancelled, so that the feeling of protest among the Sangat (community) can be calmed.
