Amritsar, August 4:

A two-day Gurmat Samagam (religious congregation) will be held by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, to mark the 150-year centenary of the beginning of the Singh Sabha Movement.

The main congregation in this regard will be held on October 1, 2023, and will be attended by prominent Panthic personalities. A meeting of the sub-committee constituted by SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami to plan the congregations in connection with this centenary was held here today at the SGPC office, which was attended by SGPC General Secretary Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal, Executive Member Bawa Singh Gumanpura, Members Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, Bhai Ram Singh and Secretary of Dharam Prachar Committee Balwinder Singh Kahlwan.

SGPC General Secretary Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal said after the meeting that the Singh Sabha Movement had registered a strong presence in the light of the original traditions and religious history of the community while fiercely fighting the challenges faced by the Sikh faith. Singh Sabha Movement started in 1873 AD when the Sikhs’ conversions and attacks on Sikh principles came to the fore. He said that the Singh Sabha Movement brought religious reforms to the Sikh society besides fresh cultural consciousness and vigorously worked for the propagation of Gurmat (teachings of Sikh Gurus). The leaders of the Singh Sabha Movement made the community religiously and educationally aware and gave a befitting reply to those who attacked the Sikh faith.

He said that the 150-year centenary congregations dedicated to this glorious Sikh consciousness will be organised with grandeur by the SGPC. He said that as a strong part of the Singh Sabha Movement, Sri Guru Singh Sabhas contributed significantly to the propagation of the Sikh faith and which is continuously engaged in Panthic activities. He said that along with the full participation of Singh Sabhas on the occasion of the centenary congregation, the support of various organisations will also be taken.

Bhai Grewal said that during the centenary congregation of the Singh Sabha Movement by the SGPC, a two-day Gurmat Samagam will be held at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall. These events will be held on September 30 and October 1, 2023. He said that before this, the SGPC will conduct five international seminars in different parts of the country.
